In a spectacular display of academic prowess, the Faculty of Business and Management Science stole the limelight at the UoN 70th graduation ceremony held on Friday, December 15, 2023. The faculty celebrated the highest number of graduates, an impressive 1708 out of the total 5744 graduands, marking a significant milestone in the institution's commitment to producing resilient and highly skilled professionals. Among the 1708 graduates, 17 proudly donned the mantle of Doctor of Philosophy. This remarkable number accounted for an impressive 23% of all PhDs conferred, placing the Faculty at the forefront of academic accomplishment. Hon. Katoo Ole Metito, State House Comptroller, and Joseph Kosgey, CEO of the Privatization Commission, stood shoulder-to-shoulder with their fellow doctoral graduates, a testament to the transformative power of UoN's business education.
The graduation ceremony, themed "Transforming Society Through Resilient Graduates," was officiated by the acting Chancellor; Prof. Amukowa Anangwe, and Chief Guest Cabinet Secretary, Education, Hon. Ezekiel Machogu. Their inspiring speeches emphasized the graduates' unwavering dedication and potential to contribute meaningfully to society."
"Today is a momentous occasion that marks not only the culmination of your hard work and dedication but also the beginning of a new chapter in your lives. Your achievements fill us with great pride, and I hope that you recognize the limitless opportunities that lie ahead with the power of quality education," remarked Hon. Machogu, extending warm congratulations to the graduating class of December 2023.
The Cabinet Secretary also addressed unemployment in the country, shedding light on the government's initiatives to create employment opportunities for skilled workers abroad. He mentioned the establishment of the State Department for Diaspora, emphasizing the government's commitment to supporting the success of graduates both locally and globally. Additionally, Hon. Machogu encouraged the graduates to join the Alumni Association, pledging his commitment to becoming a member and advocating for support through scholarships, student attachments, and infrastructure development.
Prof. Amukowa Anangwe, the Acting Chancellor and Chair of Council, played a pivotal role in conferring degrees and diplomas. Addressing the class of 2023, Prof. Anangwe urged the university community to strive towards making the University of Nairobi a beacon of excellence and a center of innovation. "As we celebrate your graduation, I urge you to continue to embrace a culture of discipline, innovation, and problem-solving. Together, we can overcome challenges, address socio-economic issues, and contribute to the growth and development of our nation," he declared.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Stephen Kiama, expressed his pleasure in presenting 5,744 graduands for the 70th graduation. The diverse range of awards included 73 Ph.D., 37 fellowships, 1,632 master's degrees, 55 postgraduate diplomas, 3,666 bachelor's degrees, and 281 diploma awards. Prof. Kiama took the opportunity to address financial challenges, highlighting the need for government support in funding postgraduate programs to prevent funding gaps for major universities like UoN. He emphasized the importance of innovative thinking to improve the university's financial situation, especially in light of challenges such as increased fuel costs and the financial strain caused by the new Collective Bargain Agreement.
The sheer number of graduates is only part of the story. The Faculty of Business and Management Science boasts a dynamic curriculum, world-class faculty, and a vibrant student community.
