Independent Police Oversight Authority is discussing the possibility of a collaboration with the University of Nairobi Faculty of Business and Management Sciences. IPOA delegation was led by CEO, Elama Halake, and Vice Chair Anne Wanjiku Mwangi 

 

Speaking during the event, the Dean, Prof. Kennedy Ogollah, pointed out that at the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences,  “ Our work is research, teaching and learning, community service and commercialization of research.  Inside the challenges we see opportunities. This collaboration fits with our vision which is to aspire to be globally competitive university, transforming the society both locally and globally, “ he said.

He pointed out that at the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences, they handle marketing, human resource, strategic management, international business and insurance.

The Team from IPOA gave a detailed overview of their mandate which is to hold the police  accountable to the public.

“We work to oversight the Police. IPOA is the second oversight body. Governed by the board, have 8 commissioners headed by vice chairperson. Handles complains within police force. Investigates complains against police. Conduct inspection in detention centers, report findings to parliament and county assemblies,” said the Vice Chair, Anne Wanjiku.

In the collaboration, IPOA is looking towards police accountability, enhanced public trust, improve data and knowledge management as key result areas.

The CEO explained further that they are exploring possibility of research and knowledge management in police oversight and accountability. Impact of ipoa interventions, robust data analysis on police misconduct, data visualization tools, publication of research papers and reports, call  for papers on police oversight, we have clean audit reports.

The collaboration will delve into training and capacity building for staff, sound financial management for the authority, capacity building for corporate governance audits, ICT systems, cyber and network security training, curriculum development. Also included in the collaboration will be resource mobilization and consultancies : joint bids on thematic areas, partner in doing consultancies, joint fundraising proposals for various projects, develop strategies for enhancing public awareness of IPOA’s role and functions and promoting citizen engagement and trust among the youth.

 

The meeting was attended by Prof. Peterson Magutu, Associate Dean, Graduate Business Studies and Research, Dr. Reuben Kikwatha, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Studies and Chairperson of all the 3 Departments and faculty staff members.
