Staff Members at the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences, University of Nairobi have been trained on fire safety and ways of handling fire.
The training was conducted by Augustine Mburu on Wednesday, March 25, 2025 at the New Lecture Theatre.
Speaking during the event, Mr. Mburu explained in details the fire triangle and what ensures that fire can take place, these are; oxygen, heat and fuel. The absence of any of these will result in fire failure and in our case, being able to put off the fire. “It is the fire triangle that causes fire. There must be oxygen, heat and fuel, “he said.
He also briefly mentioned the causes of fire. These being negligence when burning trash around the home, malice by outsiders, faulty equipment in the home, open flames like cigarettes.
Staff members also managed to learn various classes of fire and how they can be extinguished. The basic classes are A, B, C, D and F. On ways to extinguish the fire, staff and students who were present during the meeting were told that Class A fires is extinguished by water. They are small domestic fires. Class B fires are from flammable liquids and Class C fires are from flammable gasses.
Apart from fire extinguishers which uses water, powder and carbon dioxide, fire blankets can also be used when putting out fires. They work by removing oxygen, one of the fire triangle and hence putting off fire.
Another method of putting off fires is starving. This is where surrounding inflammable objects are pushed aside to stop the fire from spreading.
In case of a fire breakout, how should staff and students respond?
Mr. Mburu was quick to explain that people should shout and alert others, use exit doors, look out for fire extinguishers and use them, incase the fire is very big, then they should call for help as they get out to gather at the Fire Assembly Point.
