A team from the Ministry of Education, State Department of Higher Education, led by Bishop Vainadu Ingana inspected infrastructure projects at the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences.
Top on the agenda was the inspection of the incomplete student hostels that has stalled for over 30 years.
The team also wanted to know, the preparedness of the Faculty in handling the digital disruptions such as robotics, big data, artificial intelligence, internet of things, blockchain among others. The 4th Industrial Revolution, 4IR is disrupting the workplace and more so academic institutions and the team was keen in knowing how the University of Nairobi and more so the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences was preparing the students to handle such disruptions.
In his response, Prof. Kennedy Ogollah, Dean, Faculty of Business and Management Sciences outlined the various innovations happening at the Faculty. “We have product innovation, process innovation, organizational innovation and market innovation. We have smart classroom for e-Learning purposes and hence able to teach in Kisumu Campus, Mombasa Campus and Nyandarua University all at the same time”, he said. The Faculty has adopted technology in its teaching and learning functions.
The Dean also pointed out that the current curriculum is under review to align with the 4th Industrial Revolution and the subsequent 5th Industrial Revolution. “We have made efforts to cover the Chancellor’s Big 5 Agenda at the University of Nairobi by teaching common units like Entrepreneurship and Artificial Intelligence.
Prof. Peterson Magutu, Associate Dean, Graduate Business and Research Studies, pointed out that the Faculty is working on empowering students with soft skills like critical thinking, problem solving and experiential learning among others. “We are working on having AI powered business solutions, having outreach programs on AI adoption. We also participate in UoN Innovation Week and Research Week,” he said.
The meeting was attended by Prof. Stephen Odok, Chairman Department of Management Science, Dr. Eric Ondigo, Chairman, Department of Finance and Accounting, Dr. Michael Wangai, Director, Quality Assurance and Francis Kivindu, Registrar, Faculty of Business and Management Sciences among others.
