SEWA KENYA has pledged to support about 40 poor and needy students to get food on a daily basis. SEWA Kenya is a charity programme run by 'HINDU RELIGIOUS AND SERVICE CENTRE'. SEWA means Selfless Service to needs of society in Kenya.
Speaking during the event, the Volunteers from Sewa Kenya explained that as an organization, they have been at the forefront in helping children from various primary schools in getting food. The donations is done by individuals from HINDU RELIGIOUS AND SERVICE CENTRE.
In their endevour to provide food, they have also built modern kitchen in several schools in Nairobi and Machakos counties.
This will be the first time they are extending a helping hand to the university students and more so students from the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences.
On the need of accountability, they were assured that the Deans of Students Office, would provide the data on the most needy students who need to be assisted. The Finance Office will also be incorporated to ensure that those supported are students from Band 1.
“We have elaborate system of screening needy students, we do vetting on student backgrounds. We have some students being fed by the Dean of Students Office and Red Cross. To the best of our knowledge, they can’t afford a meal. Even if you can help 2 or 3 or 5, that is good enough,” he said.
“ said Dr. John Bosco Kisimbi, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Students.
On his part, the Registrar, Mr. Francis Kivindu noted that the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences has all manner of students, some very needy. “We donate shoes, clothes to students. Whatever number you can support, you are welcome,” he said.
Dr. Mary Mwendwa, said that due to the financial challenges faced by students, she has observed that some students do miss end of semester exams. “Some students haven’t registered because they have no fees. They can’t even do exams. Students are out there trying to make money and survive, doing odd jobs and hence missing classes, both physical classes and online classes,” she said.
Going forward, students will be asked to provide relevant documentation to qualify for the feeding program. Students were also challenged to actively take care of the avocado trees that were planted in March, 2026 at the Lower Kabete Grounds.
It was agreed that occasionally, the Sewa Kenya community will be coming to monitor how the avocado trees are doing. They promised that they are able to plant an extra 2,000 avocado trees, if we take good care of the initial trees that were previously planted.
