Mr.Titus K. Muya, EBS Founder & Director, Family Bank Limited delivered a public lecture on the “Role of Entrepreneurial culture in building a strong economy: Case of Family Bank from 1984 to date” on Friday, 10th March 2023 at the Chandaria Auditorium, UoN Towers. The lecture was attended by staff and students pursuing various courses at the University. The Public lecture was organized and hosted by the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences.
Mr. Muya gave a lively presentation about the various challenges, successes, and the story of Family Bank, which has now grown to become a regional bank. "In 1961, 62 years ago today, the dream of establishing a family bank visited me. "I was 18 at the time, reading a business article in an international magazine," he reflected on his 62-year journey. "In 1984, I had nothing but an idea, a vision, motivation, and inspiration to start a bank. "Within the first years of operation, the bank identified a niche and focused on lending to the lower end of the market of tea, coffee, and small-scale traders," he concluded, challenging students to pursue their interests with diligence.
Prof. Stephen Kiama, Vice Chancellor, welcomed the visiting team from Family Bank Kenya, as well as staff and students, to the lecture. Prof. Kiama emphasized the University's strategic direction to bring out the best in students: "we are a University that is positioning itself to be a World Class University, one of our aspirations is to produce graduates who create an impact in society both as corporate drivers and job creators," he said.
Prof. James Njihia, Dean, Faculty of Business and Management Science, also spoke about the critical role the Faculty, and by extension the University plays in shaping the destiny of graduates, saying, "The Faculty of Business and Management Sciences is the center of entrepreneurship training in Kenya; we train our graduates to be entrepreneurs, not just job seekers." Prof. Njihia also mentioned the importance of ongoing engagement with the industry because it provides a platform for students to be mentored and motivated by industry players.
Also present during the public lecture were; Dr. Wilfred D. Kiboro, EBS. Board Chairman, Mrs. Rebecca Mbithi the CEO of Family Bank Kenya, Mr. Lazarus Muema, and Arch. Francis Gitau Mungai, among others.
