Graduating from university is no mean feat. It requires perseverance, resilience, and tenacity. Many stumble along the way, but to the 4,499 of you standing before us today, congratulations! This is truly a moment of overwhelming joy and achievement.
Those were the words of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson, during the University of Nairobi 71st Graduation Ceremony at the Graduation Square, Main Campus on September 20, 2024.
“You are the embodiment of transformation. Graduating from university is no mean feat. It requires perseverance, resilience, and tenacity, “she said.
The University of Nairobi graduated 4,136 graduands: Bachelors: 3,432, Fellowship: 8, Masters: 525, PhD: 117, PGD:9, Dip:95.
Chairman of Council, Prof. Amukowa Anangwe urged graduands to lead society's transformation through innovation and resilience. 'Adapt, innovate, and never stop learning’, he said. He added that the Council has prioritized resource mobilization and long-term sustainability of the University of Nairobi.
The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Dr. Julius Migos Ogamba EBS observed that the graduands will be marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. “For most of you, the next stage will be to join the world of work, or to further your studies,” he said.
He added that through initiatives such as digital superhighway, the government is committed to creating an enabling environment for young people to access digital job opportunities. He urged the graduands to tap into the global economy and work remotely.
Chancellor. Professor Patrick V. Verkooijen congratulated the graduating class of 2024. “Today, we celebrate our graduates and launch the transformative UoN Big 5 initiatives! These projects will reshape the future of education, research, and leadership in Africa," he said.
