It was joy and celebration as over 4,583 graduates during the 72nd Graduation Ceremony from the University of Nairobi.
The University of Nairobi Chancellor Prof. Patrick V. Verkooijen stated that with the Big 5 agenda, the university is empowering graduates to lead in health, artificial intelligence, innovation, and next-gen jobs. “We are not waiting, we are MOVING. This is your launchpad. The future is yours to create”, he said.
He opined that the University of Nairobi can be the best in Africa and the world. “I am convinced we can not only be the greatest university in Africa but one of the greatest in the world. To achieve this, we must increase staff numbers and improve teacher-student ratios. With the support of the President, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, and the Council, University of Nairobi will embark on a rapid transformation plan over the next two years—our social contract with you.” Highlighting progress, Prof. Verkooijen cited the Silicon Savannah Innovation Park, backed by a €35 million French investment, as a launchpad for graduates. He urged: “Graduates, the world is waiting—go out and shake it for a united, resilient, and prosperous future.”
He also shared the story of Nafisa, a UoN medical student who developed a health app translating sign language into text. “If her prototype scales, she could serve 500 million hearing-impaired people globally. Among today’s graduates, many more are ready to make such an impact.”
University of Nairobi, Chair of the University Council, Prof. Amukowa Anangwe, reminded graduates of their vital role in shaping society. “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” Addressing financial constraints and infrastructural needs, he reassured stakeholders of the Council’s commitment to “commercializing assets, enhancing partnerships, and implementing reforms to restore UoN to its rightful stature.”
Cabinet Secretary for Education, Hon. Julius Ogamba, represented by Dr. David Watene urged graduates to view themselves as critical agents of national and continental progress. He said, “As you prepare to leave, remember that the hallmark of education is not just the degree you receive today but the impact you will create in the years ahead.”
Ag. Vice Chancellor Prof. Margaret Hutchinson commended the Class of December 2024 for their resilience and determination. She remarked, “You represent much more than your areas of specialization. You embody the aspirations of your families, the strength of your communities, and the promise of a brighter Kenya.” Reaffirming the University’s mission, she emphasized that education is a transformative force preparing graduates to address local and global challenges.
Valedictorian Wallace Chege Munyiri, a Bachelor of Anatomy graduate from the Faculty of Health Sciences, delivered an inspiring address. He stated, “To the teaching and non-teaching staff at the Department of Human Anatomy, your guidance and dedication have been the backbone of our education. You’ve taught us perseverance and excellence. I leave you with this: the mind is the most powerful tool we possess. Like fire, it has the power to illuminate and warm, but if left untamed, it can consume and destroy. Nurture it with kindness and purpose, for it will guide your journey ahead.”
Notable personalities who graduated during the 72nd graduation ceremony include: Dr. Farida Karoney, Former Cabinet Secretary for Lands and Physical Planning. She graduated with Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration.
Congratulations to the Class of 2024!
